I've been looking, as you do, at car sales in Ireland for the first quarter and I see that somebody bought a Lexus LS. Yes, just the one. Lexus really aren't a thing in Europe.
So who managed to outsell the biggest Lexus and by how much?
Well, for every LS people bought:
No Subaru BRZs (we don't do Subaru in Europe)
One Chrysler Voyager (no, not Chrysler either)
Two Teslas
Two Toyota GT86s
Three BMW i8s
Three Jeep Cherokees (no, them neither)
27 Honda Accords (nope, we don't do Hondas in Europe either)
58 Prii
85 VW Sciroccos
221 Nissan Leaves
950 Dacia Dusters
2,040 Corollas
3,218 Golves (market leader)
So there you have it. Winners and losers.

What a Golv? Also, seems like this post could be called: Ireland - We don't buy a lot of cars.

Golfs sounds silly, as does Leafs. And Priuseses.
Given that the population is 4.5m, would one expect sales similar to, say, China?

Ireland doesn't even break 100K annual car sales.

Well, those numbers may be right for Ireland (Éire), but take a look at Norway and be SHOCKED at the number of Teslas sold.
In February we sold 321 Tesla model S here, and 106 Lexuseseses (I don't have the number for the LS, but I guess it was two or less :P)

It will this year though as it's already at 65,000. It's been nearer 200,000 in the past.

And how many potatoes did they buy?

Ah, but Norway is a special case because of the incentives to buy electric. If you look to your eastern neighbour Tesla are in "other".
Edit: 138 to March.

Golii, Leaves and Prii?

True, I was just having a bit of fun. I still think it's kinda cool though, last year more than 3500 people bought a Tesla Model S here, and we've got a population of 5 point something million people.

So, with 200k, 1 in 22 people buy a new car in a given year. Those in the driving age range are probably half the population, so we're up to 1 in 11. Since it is Europe, I bet some portion don't drive at all, which probably puts us into the single digits here. The VW Golf accounts for something like 48-49% of new cars sold, about 32% are Corollas, and 16% are Dusters (really cheap small SUV?!). The remainder is split between the rest. Is it even worth selling any other models in the country?

Ahh, but Norway has one of the highest per-capita incomes in the world. After incentives, average people there could buy a Tesla Model S for roughly the same percentage of their income as people in the US would spend buying Toyota Corollas.

Enough, I would imagine.

Well, not really. But somewhat true. The Tesla is STILL an expensive car, USD 96k for the P85D or something, so even if we consider percentage of income it's not cheap. I'd say it's more like an Honda Accord or something. Not that it's not cheap in comparison though.

We're right about in line there. I wasn't thinking stripper Corolla and Accords start about where I was thinking. In any case, people in the US don't make much at all, so a Tesla is an extreme luxury car that is completely out of reach to the vast majority of the population.

It's out of reach for most of us as well, the difference between the wealthy and the "just about have enough" is rather high here as well. I think the main difference is that we have almost free healthcare (won't ever spend more than USD 400$ pr year out of pocket) and such.
I don't complain, I live in one of the best countries in the world, but the average Norwegian ain't rich :)

You'll need to do your sums again. I said in a previous post that sales for YTD were about 65,000. Of those 3,218 were the Golf.
So to answer your question, yes.
